Learn how to review your subscription, update payment information, manage renewal settings, and cancel according to Microsoft's official documentation.
A Microsoft 365 subscription with recurring billing enabled can automatically renew on its scheduled renewal date. You can check the subscription, renewal date, and billing status by signing in to the Microsoft account used to purchase the subscription.
Sign in to your Microsoft account and open Services & subscriptions. Your subscription details can show whether recurring billing is enabled and the date on which the subscription will renew or expire.
If recurring billing is enabled, you can manage the subscription from your Microsoft account and turn off recurring billing. Turning it off prevents future automatic billing, while access generally continues until the subscription’s expiration date.
You can cancel an eligible Microsoft subscription after a charge, but cancellation does not automatically guarantee a refund. Refund eligibility depends on factors such as the subscription, purchase method, timing, and country.
Some Microsoft subscription charges may be eligible for a refund. Microsoft states that eligibility can depend on the timing of cancellation and other conditions. For a subscription purchased directly from Microsoft, you can check the applicable refund process through your Microsoft account.
First check that you cancelled the correct Microsoft account and verify the subscription’s billing and expiration information. Microsoft also notes that cancellations made too close to a billing date may not prevent the next charge.
For a Microsoft subscription with recurring billing, sign in to the Microsoft account associated with the subscription, select the subscription, and use the option to change how you pay. You can add another available payment method if necessary.
A failed payment can result in a past-due subscription. Microsoft provides a Pay now option for eligible past-due subscriptions, and you may need to update an expired or invalid payment method before completing the payment.
Depending on the subscription and available options, you may be able to change the subscription recurrence through the Microsoft account’s subscription management page. Microsoft provides options for changing between monthly and annual billing for eligible subscriptions.
Start by checking the payment and subscription information associated with your Microsoft account. An unfamiliar charge can sometimes be related to recurring billing, a family member’s purchase, a previously declined payment that was processed later, or another Microsoft purchase. Microsoft provides an Investigate option for unrecognized charges.
